I found my answer...on a 98 ford ranger xlt, if the brake light doesn't work, it may be the bulbs, the brakelight switch or perhaps even a bad pigtail or a short in the system, but.........
I found out by trial and error that if one bulb is defective then both lights will not burn. The cheapest thing first may prove to be the answer.
I found one bad bulb and when it was replaced then they both worked.
Anytime you replalce one side of a dual performing item, just be smart and replace both and let it be a lesson to keep some spare parts in the glove box.
God Bless,
Gary
