Starter Change

Hi Denny,

What you will need is a long extension (24" or 36"). You will need to come from the front of the engine it is a pain but seems to be the easiest way to get to the top bolt. Also a universal joint for sockets will come in handy. And may take 2 people.

All of a sudden my truck has decided to go crazy. Once I turn the key it starts engaging and trying to turn over, when I get to the on position the engine starts but you can still hear it trying to engage. If I turn the key off it keeps engaging for about 10 minutes before it slows and finally dies off. I have tried to replace the ignition switch already and that didn't help. Please help!

Hello !!

Remove the starter and bench test it, looks to me like the solenoid contact its damage or broken (the starter has power all the time by the positive wire from the battery) and the power "flows" inside to the starter motor.

99% sure of that`s the problem, check that and comeback with your findings.

The solenoid was stuck. Took it to get tested and it unstuck. Thanks for the help! Truck is up and running and headed off for a 6 hour roadtrip.

How do i remove my starter on my ranger. i cant seem to find the bolt locations

i cant seem to find the bolt locations

I am told my slowly leaking oil pan is imundating my starter with oil and it will only be a matter of time brfore starter stops working. Since that was told me, starter seems to be getting gradually less and less effective...To fix my oil pan situation would be $ 800 some odd...Wouldnt it be cheaper to replace starter? And can I do that myself?

A starter would be around 150.00 and you could replace it yourself. However, that won't stop the oil leak and it will happen again over time.
