Engine problem
2002 Ford Ranger V6 Two Wheel Drive Automatic 80000 miles
----------------------------------------------------------------
I have a 2002 ford ranger with an engine squeal. The squeal remains coming from the engine when the serpentine belt is off. It is not a tapping noise more like reep, reep, reep, reep well you get the idea! The truck still runs great with no other outward signs of distress. Oil has been changed every 3000 miles. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Pull off the cam shaft position sensor and take a look at the cam shaft position syncronizer right below it, its probably the bearings gone dry on it. You need a special tool for alignment if you take it out, so pay close atten...maybe use a digital pic to remember it's location for installation. May be able to lube the bearings.

Thanks for the reply, Paul. I'll give it a shot as soon as possible and let you know how it goes.

Paul,

Just got to the Ranger and your solution was exactly correct. I pulled out the syncronizer and lubed it with new oil and no more squeal. May want to pass on that removal was not necessary. If you just remove the cam position sensor and pour some oil right into the synchronizer it will do the trick and you won't have to worry about timing issues. Thanks again you probably saved me a couple hundred bucks.

Glad it worked, don't know what you donated, but if you think you did better, we won't refuse another!

I don't mean to sound like a beggar, but really happy you got it fixed!
