Fuel filter??

Auto parts stores make a spring seat kit to replace the damaged clip in the housing. Use a pick to remove the old one and then just install the new one. CHeck out the diagrams below.

I bought the release tool . Stillit will not release the fuel filter. What am I doing wrong? One side released the other will not.

just make sure u are using the correct tool
check if any had pulled on it to brake the inside clip

I have a 1999 Ford Ranger with 170,000 miles. I cannot get the fuel filter off. I have removed all of the odvious clips but it still will not come off. Do I need a special tool?

how is it conected is it the threaded type or rubber hoses attached.... usually with a stubborn rubber hose i use a little WD and take a pair of vice grips and twist the hose on the end of the filter to break the seize and then try to pull it apart.... good luck.... :)

If it has the metal spring clips. Get some lube and soak the hell out of it. Move the line going into the fuel filter in and out until it moves freely. You need a special too to undo the lines. Go to an autozone and rent it. push the tool into the srping clip and pull the line out of the fuel filter. If it is that style, which i think it is. If it has never been changed then it will fight you for a little while.

I've taken the filter off before, I have now two differently designed
little tools to disengage the outflow connection, and they both fit, but that little donut spring inside the metal sleeve of the fuel line wont budge.

Shoot a little oil in the "crack", around the spring, push hard as you twist the tool back and forth

I have found that the more travel you can get while twisting, the ezier it is

i have changed fuel filter, 3 fuel filters in 6 months, relays in fuse box, fuelpressure regularor, and a carb sensor. it now will start but after 2 or 3 minutes it starts choking and dies. sound really rough. what parts should i be looking at now? also if you cover the carb with your hand it has suction but no gas is on your hand

use a gage and check for proper fuel pressure. Any applicable trouble codes? Clean the throttle-body.

we are working in the yard. no gages for presure. cant get codes becuase check engine light is not on. and the throttle body has been cleaned... thank you for your help. it is starting but it sounds like there is air in the lines somewhere when you put it in gear.

Some of the national brand autostores used to loan out a fuel pressure gage. Without something to point us in the right direction, all I can do is hunt and peck.

I AM CHANGING A FUEL FILTER ON MY FORD RANGER, IS THERE ANYTHING SPECIAL I NEED TO DO, OR DO I JUST REMOVE THE CLIPS FROM THE LINE AND REPLACE THE FILTER,

Clean all dirt and/or grease from the fuel filter fittings. "Quick Connect'' fittings are used on models equipped with a pressurized fuel system. These fittings must be disconnected using the proper procedure or the fittings may be damaged. The fuel filter uses a "hairpin'' clip retainer. Spread the two hairpin clip legs about 1 / 8 in. (3mm) each to disengage it from the fitting, then pull the clip outward. Use finger pressure only; do not use any tools. Push the quick connect fittings onto the filter ends. Ford recommends that the retaining clips be replaced whenever removed. The fuel tubes used on these fuel systems are manufactured in 5 / 16 in. and 3 / 8 in. diameters. Each fuel tube takes a different size hairpin clip, so keep this in mind when purchasing new clips. A click will be heard when the hairpin clip snaps into its proper position. Pull on the lines with moderate pressure to ensure proper connection. Start the engine and check for fuel leaks. If the inertia switch (reset switch) was disconnected to relieve the fuel system pressure, cycle the ignition switch from the OFF to ON position several times to re-charge the fuel system before attempting to start the engine.

How does one relieve the fuel line pressure on this vehicle prior to replacing the filter?

Well, you could relieve the pressure from your fuel rail. There is a black capped valve (looks similar to tire valve) make sure the key is off, than press in till pressure is relieved. You will get fuel all over your engine... Me, I would just grab a pan and slowly pull the line from the filter. It will only spray for a second or two... as long as the key is off.

There's an easy way to do it:
turn your car on and unplug the fuel pump relay...
your car will keep running for a few seconds then will die. Try to start it a few more times (with the relay still removed) to make sure you get rid of any pressure left, and you're good to go.

After you're done replacing the filter, and with the relay back on there, turn your key to 'on' a few times to rebuild pressure.

replacing the fuel filter is very easy on this car and it won't take you more than 5 minutes.

Engine Performance problem
1986 Ford Ranger 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 78k miles

On my 2.9L 86 Ranger under the drivers seat attached to the frame is a black canister that looks like it might have a fuel filter inside of it, it looks like the bottom reservoir unscrews. Approx 18" in front of it is another part that also appears to be a filter attached to the frame. Are there two filters?

There are two fuel filters on the 86 Ranger. The primary is located inside the left frame rail, near the area between the cab and the bed. It is behind a metal shield. Take one of the two bolts out and you should be able to swing the shield away and remove and replace the filter. It is a fist sized and shaped like a cylinder. The secondary filter is located in the engine compartment. Trace the fuel line from from the left frame rail up into the compartment. You should find it near the left rear. It is shaped like a traditional filter and looks like a doll's goblet with nipples
