1998 Ford Ranger Whine in 5th Gear

I am thinking of purchasing this truck from a friend who has maintained the truck well but there is a loud Whine that comes from the engine when I press the gas when in 5th Gear. If I let off the gas it goes aways but comes back when I press the gas again.

My friend says this has always been the case...can you tell me if this is common or sounds like a problem (with a starting point)?

Personally i would be looking else where if the truck has unusual noises like this, i would be very cautious indeed as you may be in for a considerable repair bill, a noise like this must be heard first hand, as a diagnosis is near on impossible with out actually hearing it, regardless, i would not even consider a purchase if there was any such noise, if you are intent on buying the car, you should really have the car tested and inspected by a qualified mechanic first, a $50 or so bill to get this done may save you thousands in the future.
