Smoke started coming from the heater and defroster vents the other day. I quickly turned the heater and fan off and the smoke stopped. When turned back on it started again. As I turn the temperature control knob up it increases and decreases when turned down. It smells electrical like a bad ballast in an old flourscent light fixture. The fan motor works fine. No strange sounds. Any suggestions.

I would look under the dash and check the connectors near the blower for signs of melting! The blower resistor may be getting too hot!
