Was in the process of buying a used ranger from dealer. I drove it about 50 miles the other day and it sounded fine. Parked it for about 15 mins and when I got back in it would not shift into gear while running. Could shift it into gear when not running and drive it but could not change gears while running. If I forced it I could get it into reverse while running but it made a load grinding noise. I had it towed back to the shop. When it got off the tow lift it ran fine..? Any ideas on what this could be? Help would be greatly appreciated..Thanks in advance!!

I had the same problem with my 94 F-150
Turns out to be the clutch slave cylinder. I could do exactly as you described. I could start the truck in 1st or 2nd gear (Brake ON) then I could drive it by letting up on the gas pedal to shift. But the problem quickly worsened, so I had the clutch slave cylinder replaced. Ford uses a hydraulic type cylinder.
