1996 Ford Ranger, 3.0, 5 speed manual, 130K: All fluid levels okay, including transmission: Rear wheels off the ground. Start engine, no noise. Go through the gears at idle and a "scraping type" sound comes from the area of transmission (I'm laying on the floor listening but I'm not crazy to get under the running vehicle.) The higher the gear, the louder the noise. No noise when clutch is depressed. I suspect the pilot bearing. Your opinion please.

It sounds like a pilot bearing to me as well.
