Recently my starter has quit engaging sometimes. I have cleaned the battery connectors and that didn't do any good. But when I tap on most anything steel, like a belt tensioner, etc. it starts.
Could this be a ground wire?

Ok here is what I need you to check is the starter solenoid on the fender next to the battery. Now if you have a digital volt meter hook it up between the S term and Ground and have some one turn the key to the start position and check for voltage there, if there is voltage there then hook you meter between the cable going down to the start and ground and again turn the key to start position if there is now voltage there then replace the soleniod. here is a pic of the solenoid.

I didn't see the selenoid on the fender. Could it be the kind that is mounted on the starter?

OK if you have one of these solenoids it will be on the fender near the battery. You may not have one as you truck is that year were it could go either way. Get back to me.
