1995 ford ranger pickup, 4 cylinder, manual shift, 271000 m

what would make the back end of the truck be so light ended that when driving normal speed (70) on freeway and hit a bump that I would fishtail and really have to slam on brakes to keep truck in control? I have been told I need something to weigh it down but I don't hear of other people with this type of pick up having to do that. :?
