Brakes problem

Out of nowhere, my brake pedal has gone almost all the way to the floor when I use the brakes. Normally the pedal would go down just a little before before I get plenty of brake-age. Now I have to push it down clear to the floor to get barely any brakeage.
Is this just age? Exactly WHAT do I need to get fixed and how much SHOULD it cost?
I do not want to get ripped off, I'm just a poor college student.
