1995 Ford Ranger

I have a 1995 Ford Ranger, manual transmission. Today I was driving and as I slowed @ a red light the gear shift locked up in 2nd. Now it is stuck and will not budge! Any ideas........I am hoping it is something simple, rather than the tranny failing. Any suggestion or input will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!- Mich

remove the boot on the floor that covers the shifter, underneaith that is where the shifter lever goes down into the transmission. remove the bolts that hold the plate onto the transmission, lift the shifter out and check the ball and pin that holds the shifter in place, {inside the transmssion cover plate where the shift lever is in} . sometime the ball that centers the shift rod goes bad. making it slip out of position.
