1993 Ford Ranger Replacing the distibutor

Engine Performance problem
1993 Ford Ranger 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual

My sons truck had striped some gears on the distributor...after buying a replacement distributor and placeing it in...or course the timeing was off....after removing and replaceing it several times was able to get it running enoough to get it home....is there a way to time the motor without having to pull and rebuilt the whole thing.....please advise.

Put the engine no.1 piston on its compression stroke/TDC then line the crankshaft pulley timing marks/scale to zero degree-install the distributor making sure the rotor is pointing to the no.1 cap tower then follow the firing order rotation-then adjust the ignition timing
