1984 ford ranger, where is reverse?

i had a cluch job done on it, its 4wd, the shifter stick is really sloppy i think i just need to get a new one. but we cant find reverse for some reason.. its up and over and or down and over?

Should be an h pattern and reverse should be over and down.

i pulled the stick shifter back out and the little ball shapped thing at the bottom of the stick is missing.. im thinking thats whats wrong..but thanx
