1990 Ford Probe raw gas smell and poor fuel mileage

I have a 1990 ford probe. When Im driving i can smell raw fuel. There is no sign of leaks at all. Its not the raw egg smell it smells like unburned fuel.Also gas mileage is really bad, and my check engine light just came on. Is there codes I can check for this year of car or does anybody know where a good place to start troubleshooting with these symptoms. Thanks in advance steve
