1974 Ford Pinto 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual ? miles

I have a volkwagen dune buggy with a 1974 Ford 2.0 engine. The buggy has been dying when I decelerate or at idle. I have adjusted the idle speed and it doesn't seem to want to stay adjusted. It always seems to go back to about 5,000 rpm. The carbuetor is a two barrel and one side is very clean and the other is black. I'm wondering what I should try next to get it to not die when deceleating or in idle.

If this is a stock engine the carb had a decel valve that was right next to teh carb on the outer side. I't s about 2-3" long and kind of square. the diaphragm on the bottom used to wear out and leak. This would cause an idle/decel problem. AS this is used in a dune buggy i'd also take the air cleaner off off and use choke cleaner to clean both throttle plates on the engine. Make sure to keep the air filter clean as you are driving it in one of the most abusive situations that an engine has to survive. If you can find the diaphragm then replace it. A simple test is to put your finger on the bottom of the decel valve if it leaks your idle will smooth out...
