Rear axle lubricant

I know I've been asking a lot of questions for being a newbie here, but I must do as much of the work on this cruiser as I can to save money. Anyway, will the synthetic gear oil such as Redline work in place of the standard gear oil? Also, will the Redline with the limited slip additive work without adding the friction modifier suggested in the owners manual? This is for a 2001 CVPI, currently in service as a cruiser. It has 140,000+ miles. Do I need to replace the rear lubricant? Nothing is wrong, just trying to prevent anything from happening.

Thanks!

As for the rear gear oil, yes I do recommend synthetic gear oil is a good choice to replace your gear oil. You said that it had 140k, have you ever changed the rear gear oil before, if not you sure do need to change it. As for the limited slip additive, if you don't have a limited slip don't put the additive in. Remember that if you keep up with your maintenance your vehicle will give you much better service and reliability.

Thanks for the reply. The door decal advises that it is in fact a limited slip, so with that in mind will the synthetic lube with the additive work, or for safety sake should I just purchase a separate container of the additive? Would too much of the additive do it harm? I have a few bottles of the Redline with the additive, which is why I'm asking.

Thanks!

The redline with the additive in it is fine, just drain the rear end and refill with the redline. It is full when the oil starts coming out the fill hole. Good luck.
