1996 Other Ford Models my van

most people say its the speed sensor, and that could be . but my van does not have the same speed sensor that most do. most plug in the side of the trans. mine has the abs/ speed sensor. And it does control the shifting as well as the speedometer, I know because I replased it and now everything works again. It is located on the top of the rearend differential and is very easy to repair (5 minutes)
