1990 Other Ford Models Is this a good price?

Hi there, I hope you can help me out. I have been told by a mechanic that the gear box to me Ford Capri Convertible (1990 model) has gone. Originally i thought it was the thrust bearing as when the car was on i would hear crunching noises in the engine bay, but when clutch was engaged it will cease. Upon further expection, I am now being told it is my gear box.
I have obtained a quote for around $550 for a 2nd hand gear box and labour....does this sound about right? ($300 gear box and $250 labour)
