My 1993 LX mustang has a problem. It runs fine when it idles sometimes the idle drops down lower than normal but it picks back up. But when iam driving when i go to hit the gas it dies down like it wants to stall. and its not all the time its only on occasion. It got bad today when i went out it actually i was goin 60 on the highway and it just started out of no where. and i had to wait a little bit for it to work right again. and now its doing fine again dies down sometimes but nothing like what just happened I was wondering if this might be the fuel pump goin bad or a relay or something please help me i got to take my little sister to school everyday and it scares me to drive her in it because if it breaks down it so hot outside.

the converter could be the problem, try when its cold to tap it and see if you hear anything rattling when you hit it. if you hear something rattling inide then you know the converter is going bad. You can also tell by after driving for a while and at night look to see if the converter glows red. that is a tell tale sign that the converter is clogged.

Was there something loose in the cat or did it glow?I'd check fuel pressure first, much easier than ANY exhaust work! There's a schrader valve on your fuel rail (like a tire stem) - hook up an inexpensive guage (if you don't have one, get one with a long hose - you'll use it again someday) and slip under wiper so you can see while driving- just don't turn the wipers on...if it drops when fault occurs you'll need to replace pump-check procedure before getting parts because I remember one mustang you had to destroy the filler neck grommet to R&R tank to get at pump.

you can check the cat converter by hitting it with your hand, just make sure the cionverter is cool. if you hear a rattling sound that tells you the converter is breaking up. you don't have to take it apart. you can also tell by the way the exhaust smells, a little like rotten eggs.

you said that the converter was smoking, did you see if rattles, like something broken inside? What I think is happening is that the converter is letting some exhaust through but clogging up when you try to speed up. When you hit the gas the car shake, that is because you are putting fuel in the engine and the converter is not letting it go through, bogging down the engine. I would have the converter checked out. If you are driving at night and when you shut down the engine look to see if the converter is glowing red, that is a sign that the converter is clogged up.

It doesn't sound like a timing issue. since the car runs fine for a while. If the timing was a off a bit it would act like it most of the time. With the timing being off it could effect the valves and cam shaft.

ok thank you i believe it to be a fuel problem because it only does it sometimes and when it does bog out in the mornings when it is cold it backfires and is fine but then sometimes when iam driving and it completely quits running right when i stop the car it sits there and idles fine its not like it is cutting off on me it just like it dont want to take the gas and when i stop for a minute it sits there and idles and then it moves good again i think it may be the screen in the gas tank by the fuel pump
