1973 Ford LTD V8 Four Wheel Drive Automatic

I pulled the rods in my truck and noticed that one of them is a copperish color at one end and black at the other. i have attempted to clean it off, but it doesnt work. i was wondering if you could tell me what caused this and how to fix it.
