1964 Ford Galaxie V8

Hi, I bought a new gas sending unit and gas gauge it still read 1/2 tank I have no gas in it I rewire the wire still the same reading but when t take the unit out and raise the float up reads full and push down reads empty but when I insert the unit back in goes back to 1/2 there's no gas in the tank

Sometime you can buy faulty items new. Remove the wire from the fuel level sending unit and ground it. If the gauge goes to full then the gauge is fine and the sending unit is bad. Do this with the key in the on position so that the gauges have power going to them. If the sending unit checks out fine then it could be a gauge problem or even a dash voltage regulator problem.
