2006 Ford Fusion battery dead

2006 Ford Fusion 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

My neighbors battery is dead in her car. When i came over to jump the car we were unable to put her car in neutral to back it out of the garage. With the key on it won't shift...What gives???

are you applying the brakes when trying to shift?

If the battery is flat the transmission shifter lock out solenoid wont activate with the foot on the brake, make sure that the battery is charged and as the other poster noted , apply the brake when selecting neutral.
