when i fill focus pass half full there is a bad gas smell inside car also engine light on with code for gas smell also gas cap light on cap tight

It sounds like there is either a leak in the fuel tank or and EVAP leak. WHat I need you to do is this. The next time you place more than 1/2 tank of fuel in the tank, check for leaks. If none are found, craw under the car and look up at the filler tube where the gas flows from the pump to the fuel tank. Check it for rust or any holes that would set the evap / fuel cap code. Also, you can have the fuel cap tested at any shop.
