shifting problem

Ford Festiva '93, OD:98750 Automatic, will not shift out of park without pumping the brakes at least 4 or 5 times. Is there a way I can adjust the linkage?

I don't know this car specifically but a lot of cars use the brakelight switch or another switch on the brake pedal to "unlock" the auto transmission lever-- forcing you to step on the brake BEFORE you move it into gear. It sounds like maybe the switch isn't working properly.Look for the switch on the pedal and check if brakelights go on and lever unlocks when you push the pedal.
