1988 Ford Festiva carburated, 140000kms mileage. My festiva engine makes a "wong-wong-wong..." noise when the engine is idle and lessens when i rev it up. I traced the sound and found it coming from the timing belt cover. Could that be a bearing, water pump, or oil pump problem? I change my oil regularly and the car performs fine.

Take off the cover and replace the timing belt and tensioner. Check the water pump it may be the culpret.

Thanks. I did what you told me and check the water pump too. everything was ok then i also try to run the engine without any v-belts only with the timing belt exposed and the noise got louder. This time it seems that the noise is comming from the bottom of the crankshaft pulley. could it be the oil pump?

Not a good sound--how is the oil pressure? Also you Cannot run an engine without a harmonic balancer your will destroy the front main bearing.

oil presure is ok too. Im just worried about that sound. It doesnt sound like that before. "wong-wong-wong" thats the closest that can describe that sound. I can really hear that clearer during idle and its anoying some how. Im also worried if that sound is from the oil pump that it may fail while im driving. I havent encounter this before since im still using a factory fitted oil pump, havent replaced yet. The engine runs smooth and doesnt vibrate violently, just normal vibrations. Engine is basically in good condition in fact it always pass emission tests. some mechanics told me that it was the T belt but i dont think so. I had a new T belt already. can you describe to me how festiva oil pump looks like and what type and also how it is mounted on the engine? Thanks!!!

I think it is bolted to the front area in the engine. It is an expensive part and looks like it may be hard to put in. I haven't been into a festiva engine because they were so dependable. Shame Ford took them off the market

Good luck
