I have a 2001 F350 diesel with 310,000 km. The trans has been rebuilt. When driving the check engine light comes on and the engine looses power until you have to pull over and stop. I let the engine idle for a short time and it starts to run fine. I've had it to the Ford dealers to check for fault codes (4 times )and none are present. I've pulled the fuel tank and flushed it out as it had debris in it and change my fuel filter every 5000km. They checked the pump pressure and output and checks fine. This condition seems to happen only when climbing a steep hill or when pulling my trailer. If I slip the trans into neutral engine will run fine, put it back into gear and no power, seems like it is starving for fuel under load.

Check your turbo compressor for looseness and erosion that can result in low boost, next check your intake air system from turbo to heads for leak with a smoke machine. Both of these can give you low power, poor mpg, black smoke, low peak
boost.

Really odd the CEL is on, but no codes...there should at least be a history code I would think.

I seem to have lots of power most of the time. The engine never smokes. It seems to be fuel related. Can the fuel pump operate intermittently ? Or does it work or doesn't work. Or can it drop or fluctuate in output pressure? One would think that if the check engine light comes on the computor would hold the fault code. The experts at Ford can't figure it out. Someone ----- HELP.
Thanks Keith M.

IF you are suspecting a fuel loss when it happens, run a fuel pressure gauge up to the windsheild and tape it on so you can monitor it when the problem happens. The pcm is equipped with an over rpm/speed function that will shut off fuel delivery when a pre-determined speed is exceeded. This value may wrong in the PCM if it is faulty. Look on the door jamb for the production date. is it before 11/2000? This TSB may apply:
