check the wear surface, if its recessed it needs replacmeent, check with the ball joints loaded.

with the ball joints unloaded wiggle the tire and check for movement in the ball joints, if movement is noted they need replacment.

also if the boots are torn.

or 100000 miles comes around and they havent been replaced they need replacement.
