I have a 1991 Mustang LX with a rebuilt 351W with about 4000 miles. When I checked the guage about two miles from my house it was at about 200 degrees. I could smell coolant when I pulled in my driveway. The engine temp was at 250 degrees so I shut the car off immediatly. I found the problem to be the waterpump. Could there be more damage from running the car at this temp. The car has aluminum heads and this has me worried.

You'll be lucky if the heads and gaskets aren't blown, overheating today's engines has got to be the worst thing that can happen to them,, if the gauge starts climbing, you've got to stop now

I had a 1994 Camaro and the motor on the on demand fan burned out, when I replaced that the thermostat went out a day later. Get that checked out too.

I plan on changing the thermastat when I change the waterpump. The car did not have any issues as far as smoking or power loss when I shut it down, and after allowing it to cool down it starts and runs fine but I'm just worried because this is the first engine I've had with aluminum aftermarket heads. The oil is fine with pressure arould 60lbs. and the coolant looks normal. Other than the temperature spike everything seems o.k. The engine temperature is normally 185 - 195 but has hit 210 under full boost when I'm on it hard through all 5 gears. I just want to know if there is anything else I should look for or work on while replacing the waterpump and thermastat. (BTW the engine is from a 1987 F-150, bored .030 over with Trickflow Stage III heads and a 70mm turbo.

Aluminum heads are so easy to warp. Check to see if you have water ion the oil, also if you have an oil pressure gauge when you get it running normal again watch it to see if your oil pressure reads low, or worse yet, high. That might indicate a head or gasket prob
