1986 Ford F250 Wont Idle

My wifes grandfather just gave us a 1986 Ford F250 to plow our road with. I am unsure of the engine size but know its a V8. The problem is that it starts, but wont idle. If started I have to feather the gas to keep it running. If I tap the pedal it will sputter, backfire through the carburator and die. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

is it EFI or carbuerated. some 86s are efi. compeltely different so i need to know this information.

It has a 4bbl carb.
