2001 Ford F150 Code PO460

First let me ask several questions. Are you having trouble with the fuel guage not reading correctly? Did you try to add fuel to the tank while the key was on or the engine running? If you can answer either of these questions, we can go from there, I just want to make sure that it is definitly bad, as this code can be set for multiple reasons.

Guage is reading correctly I sometimes notice that it will drop almost 1/4 for a 15 mile drive. I did add fuel to the truck once with the engine running.

Was the fueling with the engine running a recent thing? If so, clear the code and keep driving it, the fuel sensor is no bad. It will eventually clear out. The computer takes resistance readings over a calculated period of time and relays it to the guage. This is so you won't have to worry about fuel sloshing or hills affecting the guage reading. It gets stretched out over quite a long time and if the key is on while the tank is filled, it confuses the computer and makes it act stupid. I worked for Ford for many years and we saw quite a bit of this. However, if the engine on refuel has been a while ago, we may have a bad sensor. Post back whether it was recent or not and we'll see what to do next.

The running of the engine was not that long ago but the check engine light was already on. At one time it had gone off and then came back on and will not go off. I am not sure how to reset other than disconnecting the battery. If it is a bad sensor is it something that I will be able to replace myself ?

The fuel level sensor is in the fuel tank. It's mounted to the fuel pump module. If refueling while running, happened a while ago, then you will need to check the connection at the fuel pump for corrosion or water. The sensor works off of resistance, so the connector needs to be clean and dry.

I wan t to Thank You for all your information. I guess I will just need to live with the check engine light on. As I don't think it is something that I will be able to correct myself or it will just have to wait till I take it into the shop.

We're glad to help. You can still reset the computer by disconnecting the battery for ten minutes. The vehicle may drive a little different for the first 20 miles or so, but it will clear everything in memory. then you can start over and if it comes back on we know you have a more consistant concern.
