Transmission problem
2000 Ford F150 V8 Four Wheel Drive Automatic 111,xx miles

My trucks 4wd is not working(not engaging is what they said) and when I took it to the dealer they said the gem module needed to be replaced or reprogrammed. What is the gem module and why is it so expensive to get fixed? They quoted me at least 500 dollars but said it would more than likely cost a couple hundred more. Can you give me any advice? Thank you.
