This system automatically controls the speed of the vehicle when cruising at a stable highway speed. The speed control system consists of the following:

Speed control amplifier/servo assembly
Speed control cable
Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS)
Speed control actuator switch
Stop light switch
Deactivator switch
Clutch pedal position switch (manual transmissions only)
The speed control system operates independently of engine vacuum and, therefore, does not utilize any vacuum lines.

The speed control amplifier integrates the system electronics, thereby eliminating any other electronic control modules in the vehicle. The amplifier controls the vehicle's speed via a cable attached to the throttle body lever.

The speed control actuator switch assembly is mounted on the steering wheel and allows the driver to control the system's operation. The switch assembly contains five control buttons for system functioning, namely: ON, OFF, RESUME, SET ACCEL, COAST.

The system will continue to control the vehicle's speed until the OFF button is used, or the brake pedal or clutch pedal (manual transmissions only) is depressed.

I believe you are dealing with two separate problems. Did they both stop working at once?

Check your fuses this guide will help with the fuse locations below.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-check-a-car-fuse

Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know what you find. We are interested to see what it is.

Check your fuses.

I can't find, in the owner's man, which fuses are for the horn and/or cruise control as they both stopped at the same time, I believe the problem must be related. The diagram you sent me is to small to read and when I enlarge it, it goes out of focus.

Thanks for your assist. Please keep the info coming, I don't want to have tp pay Ford to do this for me.

I have a 1998 Ford F-150 the cruise control quit working I have checked all the fuses and they are all working. The lights for the cruise still works on my steering wheel but the cruise does not. Any suggestions as to what the issue may be?

I cannot figure out the issue. I have even checked Ford Motor Company's recall list and according to their list there is no recall for this item.

you will need a shop to access the computer for any failures in the unit. i am not sure if they still used a gem module or an actual bcm for 98. at any rate. this is not something you can access.

I've had this vehicle for over a year, bought it from the second owner, who was friends with the original. All systems were working fine as the truck has been taken care of extremely well.

Several weeks ago, while on I95, headed for the VA, I noticed the cruise control would not engage. Never gave an indication it was on the way out. probably not related, but the front gas tank is not working either.

Thank you

Hello

Glad you have a nice vehicle……..sorry you are having some problems with it. I do need the specific engine information though. Is it a 302-5.0L or 351-5.8L, or 351-5.8L.

There may possible be a couple of Recalls on your Cruise Control but I will need your specific information to know for sure. Not to alarm you but one may cause a fire.

I don’t think the tank and the cruise are related.

I am not going to have you even check the fuse for the Cruise until we find out about the recall.
So please get back with me on this.

Hello Rich Well, there are three recalls on your cruise control. Please contact the dealer and give them your VIN number and they should be able to tell you if the vehicle has been repaired. I won't give you all of the info on them but enough for you to talk to them. If you want more I will send it. First One: 05S28S14 01/28/2008 Recall - Speed Control Deactivation Switch Defects Second: NHTSA07V336000 08/02/2007 Recall 07V336000: Cruise Control Fire Hazard Third: NHTSA05V388000 09/07/2005 Recall 05V388000: Cruise Control Switch Replacement The last two can cause a fire so again please check with the dealer. As for the troubleshooting, I can send you a detailed troubleshooting if you would like but you will need an Ohm meter at least. So let me know. On the troubleshooting chart for Speed Control Inoperative, in order to check is a: Blown fuse, Circuitry, Stoplight switch, burnt stop lamp bulb, speed control actuator switch assemble, vehicle speed sensor, and speed control servo. You can checkthe stop lamps and fuses. If you want you can check fuses, E, N, 8, 13 and 18. Under the hood fuse panel check 5 For the fuel tank, check fuse 6 per the operation of the system. I have attached that. PURPOSE The fuel tank selector switch is a driver controlled device that controls which fuel tank the vehicle is operating from. It also controls the switching between the fuel gauge senders in the tanks. OPERATION Voltage from fuse 6 is supplied to the fuel tank selector switch when the ignition switch is in START or RUN. The position of the fuel tank selector switch determines the direction in which the fuel tank selector valve motor will move. It also determines which fuel tank sender will control the fuel gauge operation. Your fuel tank selector switch may be bad if the fuse is okay. I have attached a pic for that. Hope this helps.

Yes Sir, the horn still works, I checked the fuses shown on the fuse boxes located under the hood and floorboard, they seem ok, don't know what else to do.

Thanks

The cruse control and horn do not work, nor does the tilt steering wheel. 1986 Small block V-8 Lariat XLT, Long bed, Manual Transmission (4 speed), 4 wheel drive
I would like to know if this is a common problem, and if so what could be the problem? The horn will work if hot wired to the battery. Every thing else is working but the A/C. Don't care about the A/C, just the horn and cruise control.

Yes the cruise control switches/buttons are in the steering wheel. The tilt wheel should work with the turn signal, and it does not, but I assume that the cruise control, horn and that are all some how connected.

You likely have a bad Voltage supply brush in the steering column or it's related wiring. That is a rotating contact that provides uninterrupted power to everything on the steering wheel. If you had an airbag, that light would be on also.

In later models it's called a Clockspring and a lot more reliable..

Being that it's a tilt wheel, that makes it much more difficult and requires a few special tools. I wouldn't recommend trying this yourself. It has some real high power springs in there also.
