98 F150 2wd with 4.2L V6 with 76k mostly in-town miles. When shifting from 2nd to 3rd, the transmission seems to slip and the engine revs. After 2-4 seconds the upshift occurs. Problem does not occur when Overdrive is off and then manually engaged. Local garage tells me I need a new transmission. Telling me 3rd gear is "gone". Hoping it's something more basic.
