Transmission problem
1997 Ford F-150 V8 Four Wheel Drive Automatic 230k miles

My 97 f-150 had a couple instrument bulbs burnt out. i removed the instrument cluster and replaced the bad bulbs, when i reinstalled the cluster and was going to drive the truck the transmission wouldnt shift and when it did it shifted very hard, wont go into drive at all . does the speedo control the transmission shifting. i didnt unhook the battery when i did this. what could be the problem, everything is connected right and secure, i am hoping that the cluster is bad because i cant afford a trans rebuild, i truly believe the trans problem is effected by the defective speedo because everything was fine until i did the work on the speedo, but i would like the advice of a trained expert because i am by no means a mechanic.i sure could use your advice. thanks don

I don't think you need a trans. It sounds like there is a problem with the vehicle speed sensor. It runs the speedo and determines shifting patterns. Have you checked it?
