i have a 1996 ford f-150. 5.0 v8. 4x4. automatic. everything is completely stock. my check engine light came on about 2 weeks ago for the first time. i didnt think much of it cause it ran just the same, till i figured out that im only getting roughly 8 miles to a gallon of fuel. then over time my truck statred idleing lower and lower and now is down just under 500rpm. i went and had the code read and it came back as either too high or too low fuel pressure, a leaky fuel injector, vacuum leak, or a leaking or defective fuel pressure regulator or fuel vacuum diaphram thingy. the truck would drive fine, it never once stalled and actually seemed to have more power im guessing due to the amount of fuel useage. now just today, while driving about 55mph the first time and only 25mph the second, both were right around 1500rpm's, the engine would shake very violently as if to have ran out of fuel and was only firing on a few of the cylinders. any info, suggestions, or things to try would be greatly appreciated. also any suggestions on how to test any of the item stated above like the leaky fuel injector would be a big help. thanks, justin.

i actually did go to autozone and they put it on the computer for free. the code that came up was P1151

definition,
lack of o2 switches-bank 2 sensor 1

explanation,
ecm could not adjust fuel trim because of a lean or rich condition

probable cause,
-fuel pressure high or low
-MAF sensor dirty/defective
-vacuum leak on engine
-leaking fuel injector or fuel pressure regulator

where do i go from here??

first of all, the code never tells you anything but a number. that numb er never identifies a bad part, just a failed system.

what was the code number??

Hi:
Make sure the wiring to the lighter is good and not damaged. Also, make sure a coin didn't fall into the lighter socket. Finally, I'm not sure what scan tool you are refering to. Can you explain?

Computer problem
1996 Ford F150 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual
----------------------------------------------------------------
This vehicle only has 52,000 miles and has not been driven very much the past 5 years. The recent work has been tune-up items, (spark plugs, air and fuel filters, cap and rotor, and clean throttle body). The engine light comes on and when I scan the codes PO 135, PO141, and PO155 all show up at the same time. If I clear them and start to drive, it takes approximately 3 miles to store the faults again. The vehicle runs so quiet and smooth that you barely know it's running. I took a gamble and replaced the 2 front O2 sensors, and it still faults the same 3 codes. Keep in mind that this is the smoothest running vehicle, if it wasn't for the check engine light being on, I wouldn't even be worried. Thanks, Ken

I have this same problem in my 1996 F-150 5.0 V8. I have checked the fuses as BMRFIXIT recommends, and they are fine. I was hoping that Mr. Grubbs could detail how he resolved the problem, or have others suggest solutions.

Thanks

Dear BMRFIXIT,

Thank you for responding. I do have the same three codes. I have replaced all three o2 sensors and still have the same codes. I have .25 volts at the heater circuit of the pigtail connection to the o2 sensor. I am not sure if that reading is enough volts for the heater circuit. The fuse for the heater circuit is fine.

It is possible that I have a ground problem or an open circuit somewhere. When I turn on the factory radio, I do get a second or so of feedback just as it turns on. Perhaps this is causing or is a clue to the codes showing as a heater circuit problem?

The previous owner had an aftermarket alarm installed and an aftermarket hitch with lights for the trailer brakes. Perhaps these are also clues.

Please help!

Disconnect O2 sensor and turn key ON or start check for battery power at the plug
you should have battery power at one of the wires and a ground on the other if not suspect bad wire check the ORG wire
check if the fuse has battery power

Check engine light came on, had a diagnostic test with a code P1131
Definition: Lack of bank 1 02 transistions - Lean
Explanation: ECM detected bank 1 02 at its lean limit
Probable Causes:
1) Misfire on bank 1
2) Vacuum leak affecting bank 1 only
3) Fuel injector problem bank 1
4) Engine Mechanical condition

Light came on: on a long road trip had the test done used fuel injector cleaner then after three cold starts went off; then came back on after a 400 mile trip all has happened within the last 3 weeks. How seriuos is the problem and is it a simple fix that a novice could do?

Swap injectors from another cylinder and see if the code occurs. If the injector is bad the cylinder you swaped with should show up on the code. If nothing changes then check your spark plug for proper gap and plug wire for proper connection.

When i start my truck warm or cold, it idles for a couple seconds but then starts idling high up to 2000 to 2500 rpm. The check engine light blinks a few times and the rpms drop to almost a stall and then recovers to a normal idle. Sometimes when it drops to almost a stall, it does stall. What is causing this? After all of that the truck runs fine

Check engine light blinking typically means you have a misfire (s).

This guide can help get the codes.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/ford-lincoln-mercury-obd1-1995-and-earlier-diagnostic-trouble-code-definition-and-retrieval

First thing I would do is get the computer (OB2) scanned. This will make it easier to help in the diagnosis. Most auto part stores will do this for free. When you get the codes, write them down and let me know what they are. There are many problems that could create this symptom and without speculating for hours let's try this out first and I'll be happy to help you out in finding the problem.

Thanks look forward to your reply

Notice the diagram, check the fuse. Check voltage and ground. The circuit is grounded by the pcm. Voltage comes from the fuse. Could be problem with wiring circuit? The bulb could be burned out or vibrated loose.

Have the computer scanned for code/s-you have a problem within the engine management system that caused the CEL to turn on-This is your starting point of diagnosis, finding out what's going on.

i have a 95 f150 that has been intermittantly been giving the check engine light and the code is 327 i was told by the shop that the 327 code is a bad egr valve. i've been warned that they tell you it is something and try to sell you those parts even though that may not be the real cause of the trouble code. any answers as to what 327 could really be?

The 327 is for the DPFE sensor I will change it-this is the one that samples the flow and tells the computer how to control the EGR.

so it would be safe to say that a simple cleaning to remove carbon buildup might solve the problem?

HI there,

The first thing you will have to do is get a scan and report back the set fault codes, i will need these to start the diagnostic process.

I suggest taking it to a nationally recognized parts store and have them scan the computer for codes. Most stores will do it for free, and then we'll know exactly what direction to go.

Truck runs OK normally although doesn't seem real powerful for a 5.7 V-8. When I am towing a travel trailer, about 4000#, the check engine light comes on a lot , especially on hills. Truck has 3.55 gears and stock diameter tires. Light goes out after a short rest. Could an iffy cat. converter cause this? Thanks.

Got a 172 and 176 code for the o2 sensors on both sides. Also says system is/was lean. Don't know if the code means o2 sensors ARE bad and system is/was lean, or possibly one or the other.

dotn think a cat would be causing it now, would suspect maybe faulty fuel pump or regulator, maybe dirty injectors causing the vehicle to lack in getting fuel due to the strain of pulling and going up hills!

maybe a exhaust leak or faulty MAF sensor.
