1995 Ford F150 truck quits when put in gear

Does it feel like the transmission is a standard when the clutch is released?

No it doesn't feel like a standard shift. It feels like both motor mounts are busted and the motor quits suddenly.could it be low gas pressure or maybe a torque converter problem.

It could be either. The reason I asked about the manual transmission is because the torque converter may be staying in a lock up mode. But that would be like just letting the clutch out and killing the engine. As far as the fuel pressure, it could be a problem.

Here is a how to for checking pressure and the regulator. It is both a video and directions. You will need a pressure gauge, but most parts stores will lend or rent them to you. Check it and let me know what you find. Also, let me know if the check engine light has come on and if you are able to drive it if you keep your foot on the gas.

Joe thanks for your quick reply.I will try to explain the problem more exact. I had a trany installed and drove it home from the garage.The truck seemed to run alright but a few miles down the road it would hesitate when I stepped on the gas.I thought it was a fuel problem because it was parked all winter before I had it towed in for repairs.If it is a locked converter would I have been able to drive it the few miles I did without a problem.Like I said it will idle all day and I can rev it up as long as I do it slowly and leave it in neutral or park.If i put it in reverse it will usually stall.If I put it in drive and apply the gas slowly it will shake and eventually stall.

Actually, that sounds more like an engine issue than a transmission. Has the check engine light come on? Have you checked for vacuum leaks? Also, have you checked fuel pump pressure?

Joe: when you say engine problem are you referring to the fuel or maybe something else.I will have the fuel pressure checked today and either eliminate that problem or know the problem.

I have 49 pounds fuel pressure so that seems alright and the map sensor is ok. Like I said I can get maximum rpm if I rev it up in park or neutral slowly.What about the converter?The way the engine does that sudden shaking and stalling when I press down fast has me confused.

I would say a vacuum leak could cause it and as mentioned, a catalytic converter. One easy way to check the cat is to run the vehicle to normal operating temp and look at the cat. If it is glowing red hot, it needs replaced. It is easier to do it at night.
