A little bad oder of gas fumes sometimes in the vehicle and outside too. when I acelllerate the gas to go,the vehicle like skips a second to take off.sometimes the engine light will turn off then reappear.Car mechanic friend of mine said it might have a bad sensor.what is the sensors and how do I fix the problem.

First, there are several sensors that can cause this problem. IF the check engine light is on or has been on, then there will be a code stored in the computer. Take the vehicle to a nationallly recognized parts store and have them scan the computer. Most will do it for free, and that way we will know where the problem is coming from.

As far as the black smoke, that indicated the air / fuel mixture is too rich (too much gas). The problem could be a bad O2 sensor, temp sensor, IAC, vacuum leak, plugged catylatic conver, or the vehicle may need a good tune up.

Have it scanned and let me know what you find.
