1994 Ford F150 4 wheel drive problems

My 4 wheel drive tries to engage by itself, without me activating it. Sporadically the low range indicator light will come on (very dimly), you then can hear the four wheel drive engaging and disengaging by itself.
What am I looking at?...the transfercase motor is looking good (10 yrs old), and the wiring is fine.

Have you checked the switch itself? Also, when the 4wd lo light is on, is it trying to shift into low range?

we are working on the dash board switch right now following all the leads, had to remove the whole dash board...and yes in fact, it tries to engage into low gear, for no reason, out of the blue..
