Transmission problem

Hello, I have a 87 Ford F150 with a 4.9L , straight 6 engine with a manual transmission. The other day the shift stick broke off even with the ball where it mounts into the transmission. I was able to remove the ball and key (?) segment from the transmission. I have a new stick and I am trying to install it. I can get it back into the transmission, but it won’t shift. When I look inside the transmission I see the slot it fits in (I think) and there is a pin at the bottom. Does the key rest on top of this pin? Or do I have to push this pin back to one side to seat the new stick? The pin seems to be spring loaded. If so, how do I do this?

I would appreciate any information you may have to help me get this fixed. Thank you in advance for any type of help you can give me.

OK, I figured it out by myself. Somehow the transmission slipped back into gear when I popped out the ball end of the stick. I had a tough time figuring out how to set up to slip the new stick back into place. It helps if you have two people. One to push in the clutch while you use a long extension to align the slots down inside the transmission again. I have made a drawing to show the alignment, but I can't attach it here. Basically there are there slots. As you are looking forward, the slot on the left (has a large spring-loaded pin) align that with the slot on the right (small spring-loaded pin) in the middle. The center slot (without a pin) align it forward of the two other slots. This is the proper alignment. Then insert the new stick and lock pin. Install the spring, collar and cup and tighten. It should work, If not pull the stick back out and see if the slots got miss-aligned during the stick going back in. There are two different kinds, first you may need to push down and twist the collar counterclockwise to remove and clockwise to install like you say, here is how to install the shifter on the other possible transmission. Check out the images (below). Let us know if you need anything else.
