The issue with your 1996 Ford Explorer's tailgate causing the dome light and door ajar light to stay on is likely related to a faulty tailgate switch or latch. When you close the tailgate, a switch or sensor is activated, signaling to the vehicle's computer that the tailgate is securely closed. If this switch is malfunctioning or not making proper contact, the vehicle may think the tailgate is still open, leading to the dome light and door ajar light staying on.

To resolve this issue, you can try the following steps:

Inspect the Tailgate Latch and Striker Plate: Check the tailgate latch and striker plate for any signs of damage or misalignment. Ensure that the latch is fully engaging with the striker plate when the tailgate is closed.

Clean the Tailgate Switch Contacts: The tailgate switch or sensor may have accumulated dirt or debris that is affecting its operation. Use a contact cleaner or electrical cleaner to clean the switch contacts.

Check the Wiring: Inspect the wiring and connectors associated with the tailgate switch for any signs of damage or corrosion. Repair or replace any damaged wiring.

Lubricate the Tailgate Latch Mechanism: Applying a silicone-based lubricant to the tailgate latch mechanism can help ensure smooth operation and proper contact with the switch.

Test the Tailgate Switch: If possible, test the tailgate switch for continuity using a multimeter. Check if it properly opens and closes when the tailgate is opened and closed.

Reset the Computer: Disconnect the vehicle's battery for a few minutes and then reconnect it. This can sometimes reset the vehicle's computer and clear any false sensor readings.

If the above steps don't resolve the issue, the tailgate switch or latch may need to be replaced.

On my f-150 the little switches inside the door latch become gunked up. Try spraying the heck out of them with wd-40.

Good luck and let us know.

The 'prong' on the sensor may be bent, or damaged. Try pushing it down and securing it with tape or something, see if that works. If not, the contacts inside the switch may be bad. Try a slavage yard for a used one. Should cost under $5.
