Ford Explorer howls in cold weather

I have a 1995 Ford Explorer (2WD) that howls on cold mornings. The howling fluctuates in tone and volume but is not effected by RPMs or speed. It makes the noise whether it is idling or moving with the clutch in or out. I haven't noticed any difference in the performance or handling of the vehiicle.

Take a look at the belts. Colder weather makes things drag more and a bad belt or loose belt will slip a little more.

I have had fan belts make a screeching noise but this is not the same and the tone changes as well as the volume. The "howl" is more like something out of a sci-fi flick.

check your intake manifold. I had a 95 X and had the same symptoms. I cleaned out my manifold and it would stop temporarily.
