I have a Ford Explorer, 1999 150,000KMs 4.0L engine recently diagnosed with faulty ABS sensors. The cost for repair is astronomical and I am wondering if it is possible to disable the ABS on these models without affecting anything else.

Are there other symptoms? or is just the light on. IF it is just the light, and you are aware the ABS will no longer work, then just drive it.

Is there a way to clean the sensor prior to replacing it?

It depends why it is not giving a signal. A gm is more likely to fall into that in my experience. But there is a variety of reasons for the circumstances. A cracked ABS sensor ring, metal shavings on the sensor, bad sensor, bad harness, bad connector....
