Explorer Left Front Knocking Sound

2000 Ford Explorer XLT, 85,000 miles, V8 4wd.
When turning to the right I hear & lightly feel a single knock coming form the left front of the vehicle. It can happen at any speed, but it doens't happen everytime I turn. Any ideas what could cause this?

take it on a bumpy road dont drive to fast moderatley. does it clunk and be felt thru the floor boards? if so its a ball joint if not may be somethign with the 4wd
