apparent fluid leak 2003 ford explorer

I have a small fluid leak. Redish in color. The leak point is along the axel area about a foot in from the left front wheel. Right at where the flexible hose that leads to the front left tire starts. In addition, there is circlular shaped black plug (about inch wide) where the leak is occuring. Not a big leak. in the same area towards the right wheel is completely dry.

That would be the rack and pinion gear
for your power steering. Keep an eye on the fluid level at the very least. The fluid used is transmission fluid, but check your manual to verify.

Hard to say how long before you have to do something about it. If it were mine, I might throw a bottle or less of lucas power steering fluid conditioner to see if it helps slow it down. If the fluid goes too low, the pump will get damaged.
