2005 Ford Explorer engine fail safe mode/ limp home mode

my suv had this pop up on its screen today twice.. then the engine service soon light came up as well

i noticed it does not drive as smooth.. but nothing else is wrong that is at all noticeable.
any advice- im talking it to get a computer checheck and did a brief search on line..
