2003 Ford Explorer 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic

My 2003 Explorer 6cyl, 4wd, w/125k miles, purchased new, very well maintained has a whinning noise upon exceloration at all speeds. The noise goes away when letting off the excelorator.At speeds above 65mph a vibration in the rear becomes severe with a reverberating type noise. I replaced the tires recently thinking that may be the cause. I had it looked at by two shops and they both think it is in the transfer case. I travel for business and fear a breakdown out of town. Any suggestions?

If it is making that type of noise, it sounds like a bearing. Can you tell if the noise if in the rear or does it seem like it is more centered in the vehicle? The transfer is near the front seat area.

The noise and vibration seem to be coming from the rear. At 65mph and above when the vibration and reverberation begins I now seem to feel some wobble or shimmy, still feeling like its originating from the rear.

If the u-joints are good, then you need to start checking wheel bearings and the pinion bearing. Check for up and down play where the drive shaft goes into the differential. Also, check for excessive in and out play at the wheels.
