2002 Ford Explorer replacement of struts

This truck is used all-purpose, including driving on rough dirt/forest roads to go camping & hunting. The rear struts need replacing and have had several shops quote on them. One place suggested upgrading to heavy duty kyb's and to do front and rear. Another suggested gabriel and that I only needed to do the rear.

A - any advantages to doing all 4 struts at once, or is it reasonable to do the rears now and the fronts when they really need it.

B - any thoughts on manufacturer preference? KYB vs Gabriel or something else entirely?

My old shop teacher, who truly was a great teacher, said to our class, "if it isn't broken, don't fix it." He passed away a few years ago, but most of his quotes and recommendations have stayed with me even now after nearly 30 years have passed. So to answer one of your questions, if the front struts are good, don't replace them. When they are bad, then worry about it. By that time you may have gotten rid of the vehicle and saved yourself a couple hundred dollars. (better in your pocket than the shops)

As far as a brand, I'm not to give recommendations because we don't want our customers to think we are working for a specific company. However, either of the brands you mentioned are good. There are others too such as Monroe. Of the three brands now mentioned, get a good HD gas strut and go with the best price. They are all good and will provide years of service.
