...How does a tech confuse the diagnosis of a drive shaft and a hub bearing? He listened to the horrible noise and assumed it was the hub bearing. Turns out it wasn't. It was the drive shaft. I'm paying a little more than I though but less than expected nonetheless, are the sounds of a hub bearing and drive shaft going out very similar?

Yes, they can be very similar. Since these parts are all connected to each other, noises from one can sound like the other. Since the hub bearing is the most common failure (it takes the most stress), your tech assumed that it would solve the problem.
