Transmission problem
2002 Ford Explorer 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic

I have a 2002 ford explorer which occasionally will not shift into reverse without me trying a few times. (maybe once every two weeks) In my experience this means the transmission may be going bad. My "backyard mechanic" friend said if I change the filter it may extend the transmission life by removing metal shavings which may be in the pan. The vehicle currently has approximately 64,000 miles on it and now I'm concerned if changing the filter will do more harm then good, because I'm assuming I would need to replace the fluid as well. HELP! Trying to avoid a costly rebuild. Thank you in advance for your time and consideration.

Yes, a service will help extend the life of your transmission. On some of the ford models it take a special filler to refill the transmission, check to see if your transmission has a fluid fill tube, if not you will need the filler to service your tranmission. It is ok to service the trans at that mileage.
